This time our topic was how to take what you have around your home and restyle it for a fresher look. Dana and David are both stylists with retail backgrounds and very good at what they do. Another resident volunteered his living room. It was great fun. Everyone was asked to bring an appetizer and the winning dish would be featured on Marie Nygren's "Serenbe Style and Soul Blog". Fun!

Here's my dish...asparagus with proscuitto

Here's the winner -- A fennel bulb and an antique slab of wood made all the difference to stuffed mushrooms.

John's bookshelves after rearranging. The secret is high to low -- of course, if your bookshelves are full of books, then they are more functional and less decorative. But most of us have "stuff" in our bookshelves.

One of the neatest things David and Dana did was to go out into the woods and find little plants -- floral and greenery, twigs and sticks. Then, they added "micro beads" and glitter and set their holiday table with lots of this. It was so pretty.

Doesn't this scarf just make my outfit?

Spent the weekend in Rhinebeck, NY at the Wool & Sheep Festival. Don't ask me why. Not quite sure myself except that I've never been to any part of NY other than NYC so it seemed a good opportunity to see some of the countryside. Rhinebeck is beautiful -- quaint little village although on cloudy, rainy days it's a bit Stephen Kingish. There were sooooo many people, you could barely move through the exhibits. And the people -- hmmmm, all I can say is I don't think they get out much and they must not sell hair color in the state of NY. But, the sheep were really cool.

I think she left the curling solution on a little too long???

You think they don't notice much that doesn't concern them directly, but they notice everything. Laura and Avery came by the office today. I happened to have on an outfit that is less than ten years old -- actually all items (except the black turtle neck) were purchased this year. The pants are black, long and flowy and for some reason make me feel really tall. I had a flowy long blouse-like top over the black turtle neck (I do not know current fashion terminology so have no words to accurately describe this outfit). It's kind of artsy looking and since it's relatively new, I guess I wear it once a week like it or not. I noticed Avery giving me the once over -- you know....the way girls check out other girls. I'm thinking, she can't really be checkin' me out??? Then, she says, "You look cute, Nana." WOW. When a 6 year old tells a 60 year old they look cute, that's like totally over the top! I've felt like a gazillion dollars all afternoon especially considering that "cute" is not a word often used to describe me anymore. I wonder if she would consult with me on my next shopping trip (scheduled for 2011).

I was horsing around with the camera this weekend. She's always willing to ham it up for me.

Captiva is the itty bitty island north of Sanibel, on the west coast of Florida just a bit south of Ft. Myers. It's an hour's drive from the condo but rather than drive back and forth with the kids, we stayed at a little place called "Tween the Waters". I think it was an old fishing spot but the little cottages have been turned into places a bit more fitting for families. There's a pool (why do kids have to have this??) and the beach. Best of all worlds.

They fight like two cats locked in a closet, but occasionally you get a glimpse of brotherly/sisterly love. I do remember trying to scratch Johnny's eyes out and hitting Carol Ann with the broom -- there's no anger like sibling anger.

Do you see that sign behind their heads -- NASCRAB?? Yep, crab races at Captiva. Now this was a hoot. Everyone chooses and names their crabs. We had Bubba (Cat), Dash (Noah), and Stanley (Avery). The race official had a wicked sense of humor (and judging from the humor, not sure he had any kids -- you know, comments like, now I see why some adults eat their young -- whoa! Altho there is nothing more obnoxious than a bunch of vacationers jostling for position around a big table to watch crabs race. It took one heck of an official to keep order. Wow, that was a long parenthetical comment.). All of our crabs qualfied in one of two qualifying heats. That earned us all a Kazoo. Remember those -- mercy, two kids with kazoos made the next few days kind of rough -- and you guessed, I hid them. In the final race, good ole Bubba placed second which earned Cat folding money and a T shirt. Great fun!

So do I. The first time I went to Captiva, I was out on the beach with a flashlight and full "noseeum" gear. Just couldn't stop shelling.

Way Cool!

This video has been making it's way around on Facebook.
