Captiva Island
This is the position of a "sheller" and there is no better vocation while on vacation at Captiva. Captiva is the itty bitty island north of Sanibel, on the west coast of Florida just a bit south of Ft. Myers. It's an hour's drive from the condo but rather than drive back and forth with the kids, we stayed at a little place called "Tween the Waters". I think it was an old fishing spot but the little cottages have been turned into places a bit more fitting for families. There's a pool (why do kids have to have this??) and the beach. Best of all worlds.
These two little monkeys really seemed to enjoy their week and were so great. They fight like two cats locked in a closet, but occasionally you get a glimpse of brotherly/sisterly love. I do remember trying to scratch Johnny's eyes out and hitting Carol Ann with the broom -- there's no anger like sibling anger.
Noah, Cat and Avery. Do you see that sign behind their heads -- NASCRAB?? Yep, crab races at Captiva. Now this was a hoot. Everyone chooses and names their crabs. We had Bubba (Cat), Dash (Noah), and Stanley (Avery). The race official had a wicked sense of humor (and judging from the humor, not sure he had any kids -- you know, comments like, now I see why some adults eat their young -- whoa! Altho there is nothing more obnoxious than a bunch of vacationers jostling for position around a big table to watch crabs race. It took one heck of an official to keep order. Wow, that was a long parenthetical comment.). All of our crabs qualfied in one of two qualifying heats. That earned us all a Kazoo. Remember those -- mercy, two kids with kazoos made the next few days kind of rough -- and you guessed, I hid them. In the final race, good ole Bubba placed second which earned Cat folding money and a T shirt. Great fun!
They loved this. So do I. The first time I went to Captiva, I was out on the beach with a flashlight and full "noseeum" gear. Just couldn't stop shelling.
