More Photography Class
Another assignment in our class was to explore shooting with the same lens at different aperture settings. When you stay with the same subject, this is really neat especially if you love the bokeh (the soft blurry backgrounds).
Here I'm shooting with the 70-200mm and using a tripod.
This is shot aperture priority (Av on my camera), ISO 400 (should probably have been 200), with the lens wide open at f2. You can't distinguish anything in the background -- just what I like. My subject is virtually the only thing in the shot.
Here we're still in Av mode, but closing the lens down to f8 which starts to open up the depth of field so you can see more of the background.

This is at f16 -- not closed down all the way on this lens but now you can see the doll and the environment. It is so much easier to learn with digital -- just shoot and then look at the shots on your computer. View all the settings so you can see what's happening with shutter speed.

Hope you are having a relaxing holiday. Maybe you are having a New Year bash @ Serenbe???? Or not. Probably lots of work. If we could only get someone else to do the prep and cleanup... After any big gathering I always think of the movie Apollo 13 where Tom Hanks' wife says -- "I can't deal with the cleanup -- let's sell the house!". Or something like that. giggle
